Even Procrastinators Can Do This

I actually still need to do day 3 of the Push program yet before I can go to bed, but other than that I have gotten everything done.  Most of it was after dinner, but I got it done and that is what counts.

I also made progress on my troupe's costumes for our big show.  I need to type out directions for them before I forget all the adjustments, but big steps where made.

Dance practice tonight was Serpentine with Rachel Brice.  I forgot how hard and rewarding that DVD is.  There are a lot of places I am tight that I am not normally tight and some places that I am looser than I remember!  My backbends were much lower.  Go me!

Well, got to go if I am to get these notes typed out and do today's Push assignment.  How are you doing on your resolutions?  Any where in your progress that has surprised you?

Fringe Movement


Fringe

     Most belly dancers know that fringe helps accent a great move.  However what gets neglected is how different fringe affects the accent.  That is right, different fringe acts differently.  When you stop to think about it this is a rather elementary point.  Still, most dancers pick out fringe that will look good with the costume before thinking about the actions expected of the fringe.  The actions of the fringe are dictated by the length, materials, and placement of the fringe.  

     Length of fringe dictates the action because the kinetic energy has to move down the fringe.  The longer it has to go the more chance there is for resistance to the energy there by reducing the friction of the materials used.  This is why long fringe skirts look great with spins but eat up almost any shimmy.  Short fringe thinks all moves are big moves as it does not take as much to get them moving.  The more force behind dance moves the longer fringe can be and still serve its purpose.

    Different material move different ways.  Chainette will give very little resistance but also has little weight to throw around.  Chunky beads have a lot of weight to throw around but also have resistance.   Resistance can also be affected by how tightly strung fringe is.  Fringe should be easily articulated around a finger.   If it cannot do this, it will have too high a resistance to look good as fringe.  All other fringe materials can be adjusted to work for dance.

     Placement of fringe can also affect how it moves during dance.  Take a straight glass beaded fringe for instance.  If placed it at the bottom of the belt it will give a nice accent that most dancers like.  If placed in angular strips in the body of the belt, there is a much more noticeable accent because it is broken up and uneven.  By breaking up fringe or having fringe that is uneven, the movement of the fringe is much more noticeable even if there is not more energy going through it.  This is because there is contrast to the movement.

     When using all three of these factors, a costume can be made that will make even the smallest movements noticeable.  The belt I adore the most was one my first teacher had.  It was simple on all accounts.  Made of black velvet, it had been machine stitched with black thread in a diamond pattern.  Cording edged the fabric.  The fringe was Chainette that was sewn in tight groups of about 20 strands 3 inches apart, if memory serves.  The fringe came down to mid-thigh even though it was sewn in the middle of the belt.  That long thick fringe would move with every shimmy and hip drop.  A good spin might have left a welt on anyone too close.

     Now for using this information, how one dances and how one wants to be perceived as dancing must be taken into account.  Those with smaller movement ranges that want them to be seen as bigger need; short to medium length, medium resistance, and broken up placement.  Those with large movements that want them to be seen as smaller need; medium to long fringe, high resistance, and solid placement.

Shushanna is a great individual I have become acquainted with on Bhuz.com.  I love the skill and showmanship she shows here.  Even though it is a big stage and the audience is not near her she gives enough attention to them that I bet it felt a lot more intimate than it was.  Her opening veil work while wearing zills is something I need to work up to.

Today's Inspiration

Blanca has always been an inspiration of mine.  This piece is great to see not only her musicality and dance skill but also how to present a balance number to an audience.  She goes around and the audience gets a chance to see it is not an illusion but a real tray with real candles. 



The Joys of Dancing in the Heat

So tonight my trouped performed at an award ceremony for the middle schoolers that helped out with our military salute number at the last studio show.  The auditorium was supposed to have the a/c on.  It is also not typical for Kansas to be in the 90's in May.  Add the a/c not on to the temperature outside being above 90 and you get a hot stage.  Add stage lights and our makeup melted off.  Other than the heat and cutting down our performance due to the heat, it was a blast.  The kids loved that their ROTC teacher was also a belly dancer and that the troupe came out to perform just for them.  Best audience EVER!!!

While I said my makeup melted off, not all of it did.  For my lips I used NYX lip jumbo pencil and it did not budge a smidge.  My eyeshadow didn't budge either using NYX's HD eye base and eye shadows from the Crimson Amulet collection.

Muscles That Hurt and Flying Skirts

I was so tired after troupe practice last night I forgot to post a blog.  I'll get this out before my day starts and we'll just forget that it is a few hours late.  Okay?

So I did Shape's Bikini Body Countdown workout for only one round.  I think I should be up to two rounds starting next week.  It is still kicking my behind, and abs, and back.  Okay, every muscle hurts right now, but in that delicious after burn sort of way.  I also did one round of HIIT during my walk.  Once again, I should be able to up that next week to 2 rounds.  I'm going to up it one round a week til I reach 4 round of HIIT with each walk.  Each round of HIIT I am doing is 14 sets of 10 second sprints and 30 second rests.  This happens to correspond with how my GymBoss is programed for BBC so I don't have to sit down and mess with the programing, I just have to get my dog on his leash and go.

Troupe practice was loads of fun and hard work as always.  We are working on a new piece of choreography that Ariellah started but never finished.   It will be added to our steampunk set for this year.  So far it is pretty fun and I love being able to use our gothic moves.  Up to this point, we have used a lot of West African and Romani dance moves.  As we are a gothic troupe, getting to use our foundation move excites me.

Also last night I bought a skirt from my troupe leader that she no longer wanted.  It was a normal 25 yard skirt but she had added satin trim to the bottom hem of it.  This addition turned it into a flying skirt!  A simple way to do this is to use satin blanket binding at the hem.  This is actually what a lot of belly dancers did back in the 60's and 70's for their skirts.  Right now my only other 25+ yard skirt is all satin so I don't want to add a heavier weighted fabric to the hem.  It is already an arm workout!  Any cotton skirts in the future will get this treatment for sure.

Well, off for another day.  I have to get my costume together for a preformance tonight as well as my normal Thursday.

Today's Inspiration

I love the double veil introduction.  I'm sure the costume would be too distracting from close up with that many cutouts in the bra but from the distance filmed I can focus on the dancing.  I also liked how she seemed to be using only a few moves.

Today's Inspiration

Today I was picking mostly white costumes for some odd reason.  Not only was this a great dance piece showing pauses and musicality but her white costume was not shocking in it's sheerness.  I also love how the skirt moved.  I found two videos with the same costume.  I really love her musicality and that costume!

Starting Point

Today I start a journey to become a better dancer. That may sound like a petty goal to some, but it is a motivation that will help me along the steps that I have to do to become better. I know that to become a better dancer I have to remove other obstacles in my way. So that you understand the journey, I will tell you about the beginning.

I am a bellydancer. I would rank my current level as beginner-intermediate. The things that are standing in my way of becoming better are; my weight, lack of practice space at home, and confidence.

My weight is an issue because I am 100lbs. over weight. As a result, I have less endurance than I would need to make it through a full set. Also, moves don't ever look sharp. I know that I don't want to ever become too skinny. That would lead to my shimmies being nonexistent. I want only useful junk in my trunk! lol

Lack of practice space at home will limit anyone wanting to make true progress with their dance. Daily studio time is not always available and practicing skills and routines daily is what makes them look flawless and effortless. My lack is just due to the clutter that is in my house.

My confidence is truly just plain not there. Now, that is not to say that I can't fake it. Faking it will only get you so far though. That internal self-doubt will show through to the trained eye. If the stress on the performer is really bad, it would not even take that.

So those are going to be my four main topics of writing about; dance, weight loss, cleaning, confidence. I will try to do two blogs a day. One with that days topic. One with that day's progress report.
